Applying to WSB

How do I apply to World Services for the Blind?

World Services for the Blind has an online application but will also accept paper applications mailed or faxed to WSB. You can find both the online application and a paper format on the Admissions webpage.

What do I need to submit for the application process?

Please submit the application, most recent vision report, and a HIPAA form. These forms can be found once you submit the online application or on the admissions webpage. You can submit them directly to training@wsblind.org

How long does the admissions process take?

WSB works hard to make the admissions process as smooth as possible for students. Once your application has been processed by WSB, we will be in contact with you and your state counselor. The process can take a few weeks to a few months depending on state guidelines and authorizations.

What are the deadlines to apply for certain programs?

WSB has a rolling admissions process so you may apply at any time. If you are a student wanting to enroll in the Summer Youth Program, the deadline is May 15.

Who pays for training?

WSB is most often covered by Vocational Rehabilitation agencies. If you do not qualify for VR services currently, WSB does offer a Scholarship if you have been denied by VR. Clients are also able to self-pay if they are able.

Can I attend WSB if I am not from the United States?

Yes. International clients must have the financial resources available for tuition, room and board, and all travel arrangements, etc., to our campus. Circumstances will vary for everyone. Please contact us at training@wsblind.org for more information on programs, services and associated fees.

Programs at WSB

How long do programs take?

Program length is dependent on the program and the client’s abilities. Most programs range from 6 – 9 months.

Do I have to decide on my vocational training program before I apply?

No, WSB can work with you to decide on which program would be the best fit. If you come in for a 30-day evaluation, WSB instructors and current students are always happy to talk to you about the programs you may be interested in. WSB also offers an extensive list of online and on-campus Fundamental courses to help you decide if a career training program is right for you.

If you are unsure of the vocation you want to pursue, the MOVE (More Opportunities Through Vocational Evaluation) could be beneficial for you. You can learn more about the MOVE program on our Life Skills webpage.  

Do I have to complete a 30-day evaluation?

Not always. If you have been to a previous life skills training center, you can often skip the 30-day evaluation. Please submit those records when you apply. If you are wanting to pursue online training, you will complete a free-of-charge online assessment.

What if I am a parent but want to pursue training?

WSB offers the SPOKE (Single Parent Opportunity for Knowledge and Empowerment program for parents.

Online Programs

Which programs are available online?

Every program with the exception of Massage Therapy, IT Specialist, and Hospitality Professional is available for online study.

What technology do I need to complete the online training program?

Clients participating in Vocational online courses through World Services for the Blind are recommended to have access to the following:

·       Windows 10, 8.1 or 7 with Service Pack 1 (or later).

·       Processor: 2 GHz i3 dual core processor or similar. i5 or i7 recommended.

·       4 GB Ram required. 8 GB recommended.

·       Video/Graphics card or integrated graphics with support for DirectX 10 or higher.

·       Hard drive space: 500 GB. SSD drive recommended.

·       Internet speeds of no less than 25 Mbps.

·       Functioning microphone and webcam

Before Your Arrival On-Campus

How will my insurance work while at WSB?

If you are on Medicaid, the WSB Social Worker can help. The WSB Social Worker & Case Manager can work with you to apply for Arkansas medicaid when you arrive. You will need to cancel your in state medicaid before arriving but you will be able to reapply if you move back after your time at WSB.

You can arrive anytime to begin training.

Life at WSB

What are the COVID protocols for clients on-campus?

World Services for the Blind has many protocols in place when you arrive on campus and for clients on-campus to ensure the safety of clients and staff. You can view the full COVID protocols here.

What is a typical day at WSB?

Classes are from Monday – Friday from 8am to 4:30. Clients in prevocational training attend group sessions that pertain to a variety of topics from 11:15 – 12. Lunch for all clients is from 12 – 1:15. After class ends, clients are allowed to do as they please.

Do all clients live on campus? Do you need to be a client to live on campus?

Yes, you need to be enrolled in a program to live on-campus. On-campus clients live on campus unless given special permission otherwise. 

Do clients share dorms?

Clients have their own dorm rooms but may share a bathroom with a suitemate.

Can I bring my pet?

Guide dogs are permitted on-campus and in the dorms.

Life After WSB

Can WSB help me find housing when I finish WSB?

If you plan to stay in the Little Rock area, WSB can help you find housing. We can give suggestions if you are moving out of state.

Can you guarantee employment after I graduate?

No, we do not guarantee employment, but WSB currently has an 85% placement rate for graduates. We also have a specialized Employment Preparation class all graduates complete. We can also offer assistance once you graduate.
