Financial Literacy Fundamentals

About the program

Financial Literacy Fundamentals prepares individuals for a training course in the financial industry and is a prerequisite to the Certified Credit Counselor career training program at WSB. 75% of blind and visually impaired individuals face unemployment. This means that without a sufficient income, most blind and visually impaired individuals are facing financial turmoil. Learning to become financially aware is a step to leading a healthy lifestyle and earning competitive and integrated employment. In this course, clients will receive an initial assessment and be introduced to basic banking, budgeting, credit, debt, income planning, risk management, money flow, asset Creation, taxes, and home ownership Preparation. The instructor will use this assessment to identify measurable skills gains throughout the client’s time in the course.

Upon completing Financial Literacy Fundamentals training, clients will be better equipped to manage their money and make positive financial decisions.

Training in this course occurs in 2 phases.

Assessment

As each new client enters the course, they will undergo an assessment period. During this time, the client will work with an expert instructor to determine which skills the client has already mastered, what needs improvement and what the student has yet to learn. With quantitative results from the assessment in hand, the instructor will work with each client to develop a training plan to tailor the course’s material to the student’s unique needs.

Financial Literacy

Financial literacy and money management play a large role when transitioning into a life of sustainable independence. This course will provide the tools needed to set personal finance goals and build knowledge in a key component of life. Students will learn how to create an effective monthly budget, identify needs and wants, prioritize saving, understand credit, and learn about identity theft and how to manage money safely.
