Amanda, CFO

While studying chemistry at Arizona State University Amanda happened into a part-time position at an apartment community and as they say—the rest is history.  She soon found herself engrossed in budgets; full-scale property renovations; new construction, and managing teams of employees and vendors.  The experience she gained with managing budgets for the construction projects led her to co-found and manage her own successful cleaning company as well.  In 2013, she and her husband became foster parents and the focus of their lives changed forever.

She and her husband are now the proud forever-parents of four children and foster parents to countless others.  With the addition of foster care to her responsibilities, Amanda solidified her belief that there was more to budgets than just numbers—people make budgets matter.  After sixteen very profitable and successful years in the real estate development and management industry, she left the for-profit world to join the non-profit world to better align her professional goals with her personal ones.  Amanda came to World Services for the Blind in December 2019 joining the ranks as Chief Financial Officer with the goal to help make a difference in the daily lives of blind and visually impaired individuals—proving that people make budgets matter.

Heather, Director of Education and Training

Heather grew up on a chicken farm just outside of Athens, Georgia, though she also considers east Tennessee to be home.  Heather moved to Cleveland, Tennessee following her high school graduation to attend Lee University.  She graduated with a degree in political science in 2006.  During her college years, she had the opportunity to intern for the local District Attorney’s Office, where she developed a love of criminal law and made the decision to attend law school.  Heather received her Doctor of Jurisprudence with a certificate in International and Comparative Law from Florida Coastal School of Law in Jacksonville, Florida in 2010.  Heather loves to travel and was able to make the most of her international law studies by participating in clinical programs that allowed her to travel to the Netherlands and Trinidad & Tobago for legal externship credits.  Following her graduation, Heather returned to east Tennessee, where she served the Tenth Judicial District as a prosecutor for nine years.  In that capacity, Heather prosecuted numerous cases in state court and served on the Child Protection Investigative Team, the Special Prosecutions Unit,  and the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.  Heather began to develop her love of teaching during this time as a law instructor for the police academy.

Heather lost her vision in late 2018 due to complications from diabetes.  She spent nearly two and a half years trying to find training and services before learning about WSB in early 2021.  Heather arrived at WSB in April as a scholarship student and began her pre-vocational training.  Though she had initially planned to return to the practice of law, Heather decided to remain at WSB for the Assistive Technology Instructor program.  During her time at WSB, Heather learned how to live life as a fully independent visually impaired person and started to entertain ideas of a new career path as well.  Following her graduation from the ATI program, Heather happily accepted a job as the program instructor for WSB’s online Assistive Technology Instructor and CATIS programs.  Heather is very excited to now move into the position of Director of Education and Training and is looking forward to promoting and developing  training programs that will continue to help blind and visually impaired persons find sustainable independence and a firm place in the workforce.

Heather is very thankful for the opportunity that she had to find a new career path that brings her joy and allows her to help others change their lives for the better.  Heather believes that there is no reason that a blind or visually impaired person should have to curb their dreams for the future just because they have a disability.  Heather explains that “maybe your life won’t look the way you thought it would, but that doesn’t mean you can’t go after anything you want.”  The quote she likes to remember is ”Shoot for the moon.  Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.”

Instructors

Jerri-Ann.png

headshot of jerri-ann

Jerri-Ann, On-Campus Assistive Technology Program Instructor

Jerri-Ann is the On-Campus Assistive Technology Instructor at WSB. She lost her vision to Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) about 10 years ago. After a period of grief over her sight loss she began her personal journey toward regaining her independence.  While attending Personal Adjustment to Blindness Training, (PATB) she realized that the manner in which the curriculum was taught was as valuable as the curriculum itself. She was inspired and encouraged by others who understood the variety of emotions she was experiencing first hand.

While in training she stood at the curb of an 8-lane highway in Pittsburgh that she needed to cross, tears filled her eyes, and she was consumed with fear. She started to step off the curb but, hesitated returning her foot to the sidewalk. She stood there shaking and reached in her pocket to grab her phone and call her husband to come to Pittsburgh and take her home to safety.  She quickly regained control and thought “I’d rather die trying than to die sitting on the couch.” She stepped off the curb and began her victory walk. Frustration, fear and sorrow filled her journey and motivated her to take that first step towards achieving her goals of independence. On the other side of that road she found pride, dignity, excitement and a new sense of purpose.

In 2018 she was fortunate enough to attend the Assistive Technology Instructor program at World Services for the Blind. The compassion and determination of the staff and peers, whom she was fortunate enough to be encircled by, helped her realize more than she ever imagined was possible. She received an Assistive Technology Instructor certification, as well as Microsoft Office, Outlook, Excel, and Word. She also received certifications from Freedom Scientific for JAWS, ZoomText, and NVDA.

Her most recent accomplishment was earning her role as the on campus Assistive Technology Program Instructor in 2019.   She is truly blessed to have the opportunity to go to work every day to a job she is passionate about and for an organization who has changed the lives of so many, including her own. She strives to deliver instruction with the sincerest compassion and to be a positive role model towards blindness. Assistive technology gives a blind or visually impaired individual the ability to perform tasks that they had lost the ability to perform due to blindness.  The technology is just the tool that is used to change the lives of those whom we serve. Her goal is to share her experience and knowledge with others in hopes that they will develop life changing skills. To assist them in their personal journey of independence as they define it. She immensely enjoys watching each client grow as they develop the necessary skills for pursuing a full, independent life with dignity and pride.
